9 Out Of 10 People Will Be Ruined By The Way They Squat

Woman with elastic bandage on knee doing sport exercises in gym

I’ve seen thousands and thousands of squats in my lifetime. (Sounds dodgy that!?)

This viewpoint is my professional opinion.

It’s based on a multitude of divergent experiences…and…proven…science.

As a soft tissue specialist…movement analyst…and elite performance coach…I run my own clinic fixing “Broken people”…working in numerous different capacities…with a vast demographic of the general public…all the way up to the highest level of elite sports…movement…and performance.

To me…squats have been idiosyncratically distorted…for many different reasons.

I would bet my life that 9 out of 10 people performing the exercise…are doing so at some form of detriment…at no fault of their own.

This in turn…subconsciously affects the pattern…as a functional neuromuscular movement for everyday life…away from a performance setting.

My last post was 7000 words and if I truly broke this down we would probably be looking at 10…getting unnecessarily technical.

I don’t really know how or where to start without absolutely going in…but…I guess…we could analyse 2 areas to display my rationale for the title statement.

1. Who are you…and what do you do?

The first one is the most important…as…clearly it deals with the physiological being.

It progresses from there.

The exercise could be of complete benefit to you…or it could be a disaster for your current or personal situation.

See…who you are…and what you do…is usually the genesis of questioning…when it comes down to assessing problems with the body.

Let me give you an example…again…to keep it brief…I’m going to stick to one per section…as there are so so many diverse individual ones that could be listed.

We live in a day and age where you will find that there are more people in developed countries…working in jobs that will have them sat down for 8 hours + a day…than not.

On top of that…the majority of those numbers…for the majority of the week…will spend the majority of their time…also sat down in some way.

That’s not calling anybody by any means…as…I say…do you…how you do it…how you see it fit…it’s…the position your body is in throughout those times…I’m personally talking about.

If you think about it…it’s the modern design…the modern take on life.

Our current and future situations…are typically…not ones that benefit the efficiency of body and mind.

The evidence is in plain sight around us all.

Even if people partake in functional physical activities away from being in a sitting position at work…they will be driving…watching tv…sat at a computer…video games machine…mobile phone…eating…talking…sleeping etc etc…in the majority of their free time.

Clinically…that is where the devil is in the detail.

I can’t tell you who you are…only you know the answer to that.

What I can tell you…as a guarantee…is that…if you do spend the majority of your time in a sitting position…regardless of positive or negative posture…then you don’t need to be concentrating about loading the squat or performing it under exertive stimulus…at all.

In fact…it’s probably going to sell you your own poison in the end.

Without breaking into song and dance into the depths of biomechanics and biotensegrity…the squat…is effectively…in its most basic of explanations…a loaded seated position.

So in the scenario of above…you are taking an overused movement pattern…that you are already far too strong in…that is definitely creating some form of postural deviation and neuromuscular dysfunction…and strengthening/reinforcing it all with adaptive stimulation.

You bring functional flaws and issues…from being seated too much…into the squat…the squat then exacerbates them…which is taken back out into normal life to manifest further.

This to be consistently repeated through a cycle…that could cause a multitude of issues in the end.

I say…focus on what you really need.

If you spend the majority of your day sat down…and you can’t currently…radically…fully change that…so what?

When you train…focus on the weak elongated muscles caused from overuse in this position…and…the short congested tissues.

Focus on varied and opposing planes of movement that will allow you to stay mobile and pain free.

Focus on breathing and proprioceptive postural alignment.

It’s not to say don’t perform the movement…as it’s integral for our life.

It is to say…focus on the dysfunction to move towards homeostasis. (Attain this and happily squat)

This direction will lead you down the path of evolution you are searching for.

Tomorrow you wake up stronger.

2. Why you doing it?

Why you are doing it…is naturally the second thing to look at…it determines your ethos…your ethos…determines…the end product.

Doesn’t matter if you are standing or sitting with this one.

You are probably best to read the post directly below this to truly understand why it’s such a big topic…as it covers it all…in great detail.

I can hand on heart say that the majority of reasons…the majority of people…especially women…in this current exercise climate…are squatting…come from a distorted…manipulated ideology of health and fitness being peddled to society. (Not all…but the vast majority)

Its not just one view…it’s an amassed…amalgamation…of subgenres…subcultures and categories…that mask the true essence and purity of the endeavour.

If you squat for a “Bootie”…if you squat for quads…for a body part…or an aesthetic look/representation for example…then you may not like me saying this…but…that exercise will ruin you in the end.

The way you have been promoted to do it…the way you have been shown to look at it…just…aren’t beneficial.

They have taken your eye off the true prize…and they do it to us all.

It’s part of learning.

The squat isn’t a bum exercise…isn’t a leg exercise…isn’t a fat burning exercise…it’s a global proprioceptive test of tensegrity and mobility.

It can’t be split up.

It has to start from there before it can become anything else.

As soon as you initiate the movement…something from your toe…to your skull is changing…and it all affects and adapts each meridian line of the musculoskeletal system.

If you don’t have that as your number one consideration…before all else…you fall folly in the end…every single time…I promise you that.

Your “split”…your “routine”…your “plan”…exercises…and methodology…should reflect and address who and where you are functionally and neuromuscularly at…OUTSIDE of working out and why.

Logically…it has to be approached in that manner…no matter your desired effect from the training…otherwise injury…long term issue…or contraindication is guaranteed to occur.

If the effort does not have your well being at the forefront of it…then the effort is in vain my friends.

Your body…is yours…and there is no one size fits all…duplicate plan…that universally works in the name of specific…individual progression or longevity.

Whatever you pursue…pursue it from a personal retrospect…take into consideration…all of the considerations…and remember that it’s not about the generic norm the masses are sold on following…it’s about discovering yourself…your own body and mind.

The best exercise…the best…stretch or circuit in the world…that everybody rants…raves and goes on about…could literally be the worst in the world for you or I…who knows without assessment?

Two brief examples I could take further and further.

Look after yourself!

Guest posts are always welcome on the clinic website…I just want to share other people’s stories…as we offer many different services…and information on varied topics.
