WHAT’S ITS ALL ABOUT

This is the fitness without the lies my friends…this is from the heart…there is no pill…no shake..no powder…no serum…snake oil…nor supplement to be peddled with this one.

Today I’m telling you a tale…a story about a young man from Manchester…a story that embodies hope…inspiration and resiliency…one that I truly believe deserves to be told.

I’m a great believer in realism…a believer in being able to live within the reality of who you are…and what you personally have chosen…and accepted…for yourself…and your life.

There is absolute…vital…necessity…in being able to look in to the mirror…and to love…and to respect that person you see staring back at you…It’s critical to self development…something that is attained from being able to apply the four actions and mindsets from the previous post…those four are the foundation built…the foundation needed to create the further avenues…ideologies and rationales.

Realism is dependent on how much you choose to filter…how much you choose to see…and how much you choose to accept…Realism is the happening in the now…it’s also the acceptance of what has happened in the past and being real with ourselves about them both…it is the acceptance of what’s needed to be done…to attain whatever it is needed for us to move forward.

We can mask our thoughts with distortion…manipulate our perceived…perceptions…but that mirrors reflection…and all of those self asked questions…will always tell us the truth…they hold a legitimacy…an authenticity…they show us the things that only we get to see…to feel…to know…the things only we individually get to think…rejoice and regret…It all comes down to wanting to accept them or not…choosing to keep your eyes open or opting forever to keep them closed…We need to love and respect ourselves…but also the choices we make or don’t…To see…is to believe.

This is a very special post because…not one single amount of negativity could take the real beauty away from it all…the real beauty which lies in the fact that somebody…somewhere…one day…will read this and it will help them…I promise you that.

This is fitness and motivation in it’s truest essence…this isn’t about having abs on a beach for a week…This isn’t about fitting in to a wedding dress…or being socially accepted and perceived…as being “beautiful” or “aesthetic”…This is about changing lives for the better…it’s about waking up tomorrow mentally and physiologically stronger…becoming more confident…developing a positivity…a belief…and becoming happier.

There is no marketing scam to attach to this…It simply represents developing that efficiency to become quicker…faster…more flexible…more mobile…and healthier…to live longer and to have a better quality of life in general…for the mind and the body.

The body does not work without the mind…this post has originated from it…and so has the whole process of you reading it’s sentences…to succeed at anything…it  must all begin within the mind…the thoughts…it’s from those thoughts that the lessons need to be learnt…and the necessary actions taken…It is the benefit that fitness can bring to your work ethic…your well being…attitude…outlook…mentality and your over all clarity…that can change your life…never mind your waste size.

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY?

I still remember it to this day… it was around two years ago…I had entered a gym and been greeted by a tall…thin…teenager at the desk…I went about my normal business and started to train…after a while he caught my attention…he told me his name was Ryan and that he was just covering a shift as a casual worker…we started to talk while I worked out…we discussed our training and their individual purposes.

At that time I was concentrating on the natural bodybuilding/aesthetic side of things…and I remember he asked me lots of questions…I could see that he was extremely eager…he had a passion…a desire…yet I still felt a vibe from him so jaded by self doubt and disbelief.

The conversation was interesting…and so was his story…but the work out had finished…so I wished him all the best and we went on with our lives.

It was then two years later when I ended up personal training…instructing…and putting on classes…for another gym which was part of the same group…I walked through the door on my first day…and who was I greeted by…A tall…not at all skinny anymore…young man…Ryan Thomas

He asked me if I remembered him and I did…We revisited that conversation we started two years ago…I asked for the update…Then began to live it alongside him.

The picture above shows Ryan at 17 and anorexic…It was anorexia that hospitalised him…anorexia that started to break down his foundation…he ended up in a bad way mentally and physically.

This became his reality and it didn’t happen on it’s own…it became his outlook…the doubt…the disbelief…he lost faith in himself…and it was a result of an amalgamation of different factors…these factors always start as singular issues…then come together to create an overall bigger picture…all constantly rotating round in a circle…consistently contributing to each other….and affecting one another.

Ryan is from a place where there’s quite a few naughty kids…a place where you’ve got to be hard to not become a victim…in his own words he was 17…and a scrawny computer geek…He experienced persistent bullying…name calling…singling out..people decided to knock him…and take the opportunity to put him down…they became one of those different factors.

He had hit a bad place…A dark time…but it was again that realism that I keep talking about…that crept in…he had to look in the mirror…he had to identify the problems…and accept the honesty about them…and himself.

But then after the acceptance…actually strive to take the actions needed…to make some kind of positive change…Not just thoughts…ideas…talk…but actual action…and that action needs to be taken the second you enter any form of realisation…otherwise…it never changes…Nothing ever ends up being any different.

That’s what Ryan did…He told me that he was sick of being skinny…sick of being 6’3 and small…sick of being weak…and that’s all well and good…But it was the initial acceptance of the reality in which he was in…and the affirmative action that proceeded that acceptance…which created the basis for change…he saw that there needed to be a change…and set out to create one.

After identification the action is…and was…the opportunities both created and taken…This allowed him to start moving away from the person he no longer wanted to be.

The first opportunity taken was him deciding to join his local boxing club…He knew he needed that difference…that change…but had no clue about how to go about it…It didn’t matter…it wasn’t needed yet…he was merely beginning the start of his journey.

It was after he sought out opportunity…that his pain provided him with his application…Whatever he was going to do…he was going to give it his all…he was going to learn..to become it…to dedicate himself.

He began to box…run…to do press ups…to eat more…He got fitter and made a slight improvement to his physique…he decided that he wasn’t getting the right advice and in his eyes…he was still that scrawny kid people would pick on…he just wanted that respect…wanted people to stop thinking he was weak…so the only next logical step for him to take…he felt…was to join the army.

Ryan decided that he knew where his future lay…he had promised himself to give it his all…to become a soldier of war and be able to command the respect he deserved…he became regimented and carried on training…this was the beginning of the self belief starting to form…he started to adapt more positivity in to his  life…and although they were still running on empty…prior to this…they were non existant…at a stand still…he was progressing without even realising.

An invite to an ADSC was received and Ryan had high hopes that his hard work was going to pay off…He was turned down because of shin splints and a stress fracture to the tibia…He was heart broken…he felt crushed…the path of self progression and discovery…had come to an end…before it even had chance to start.

He believed to have found what he thought he wanted to aspire to…and it was all taken away…with no amount of expectation…he was there ready to put in the work…but it didn’t matter.

Most people would have housed that resentment in anger and let it engulf them…letting it affect their attitude…forever placing themselves in a state of limbo and excuse…But not Ryan…this is the part where the real lesson is learnt in my opinion… although the positivity he started to acquire…was drowned by negativity…he never gave up…no matter how bad this situation had knocked him…he’d just got himself out of worse than this…so the real positivity was found…A realisation that there was no way to quantify the amount of hard work and perseverance needed to reach his success…so maybe he had to put in that little bit more to see the results…he understood that the army was no longer an option…accepted it…then left it…in the past.

This right here is the difference in opportunity…i’ve said that regardless if it’s created…taken or given…opportunity is key regardless of the success or failure ratio…but only if you choose to take a lesson learnt from it…from the good..the bad..the ugly…and that’s what he did.

He then truly became the opportunist…a chance phone call out of the blue…the opportunity that would ultimately change his life…out of a random selection of names…at an under 18’s job centre…he got offered an apprenticeship at a health and leisure gym…which straight away he accepted…he took the opportunity and the only reason he did was for the 75.00 a week being offered.

It was once he started he realised that he had stumbled upon…his gold mine…he was in the place where his dreams could come true…two and two were put together and he realised that he was in the house of development and growth…physically and mentally…he was now part of a place that could bring him what he wanted to achieve…as long as he was prepared to apply himself.

The apprenticeship started by cleaning machines…mopping the weights area…talking to members…by working hard…showing respect…observing…He had the right outlook…understanding and attitude towards application…as he started to settle in to the new position…the company sent him to college to take his gym instructors qualification…by this time he had started to develop a hunger for training…a passion…and he wanted to learn more.

He was on a rapid road to progression in just 8-12 months through…identification…action…and a change to his mindset…College was done and he passed his qualification and officially becoming a gym instructor…What’s funny is that while all this was happening…was when our paths first crossed…It’s funny the way life can gravitate you towards people.

It was all worth it…Ryan finally felt that pride…started to see his body grow…started to put on healthy weight and take shape…he began to look fuller…brighter and healthier…In fitness he found a release…a relief from the pressure.

Those of us who truly dedicate ourselves to this…usually do so as it provides a sanctuary…a place where we can really be ourselves…and see the real you staring back at you…We have usually found it in the first place…from seeking salvation…from something we need to turn our back on…But the reason we fall in love with this…is the not reason we started it in the first place…It is one reason to start…and an evolution that keeps us a part of it.

Ryan identified that although he began to look better…to develop muscle mass…fill his clothes better…it was the benefits to the mind that created the most adaptation…the most change.

He says that because of the lessons learnt throughout his journey…he has developed skin thicker than a Tyre…he no longer let’s anybody get to him and has faith in himself…his abilities and his actions…he has developed a respect for himself and for others…a respect for who he is…where he came from…what he was…what he is…where he is going and what he could be.

This was no longer a skinny…weak…fragile boy…This was a mentally and physiologically stronger…more mobile…agile…and happier…man.

The anorexia was beaten…he started to eat more and fuel his body…this young man literally changed his life around…something that was was a negative…was turned to a positive……Below is a comparison of what he was and what he has become.

It just shows you how you can turn your life around the second you actually decide to do something about it…Ryan took it for so long before he just got sick of it…sometimes it’s easier to “bury your head”…than it is to face any demons or issues head on…but this is a story of a person who went from being lost to found…one that found the result in opportunity…realism…self belief…positivity…hard work and resiliency.

This last year I’ve seen him most days…and I’ve got to live it with him…while he lived mine alongside me…It was a mutual respect that developed in to two people constantly pushing each other to keep getting better.

I’m almost 28 and he is 20…this is the proof that 80 years of life with your eyes closed…does not even begin to equate…to 80 days with them open…So the advice we take…the lead we follow…the inspiration we draw…and the opinions we value…should not be conceived or determined by age…social status…or a hierarchy of educational worth…its all about what you’ve been through and most importantly what you have learnt and taken from it…no matter how good or bad…you can’t learn…develop or grow…without experiencing and learning…and moving on from both…eyes open…or eyes closed…there are only two options…Life does not offer qualifications…but it does provide you with learning material.

The day I met Ryan for the second time I identified straight off the bat that he had grown…matured…he had evolved…but he still had that self doubt that crept in to his mindset…over the last year I have seen him fully start to conquer it.

This is why I wanted to tell this story…because I’ve seen him grow even further…what he has achieved mentally and physically…his level of maturity this past year…let alone the last two…is more than I could have ever perceived at 20 years of age…more than most people you would ever meet…We have to draw our inspiration from others.

This past year I’ve seen him develop in to somebody with the world at his fingertips…In a very good mind state to go and conquer it…somebody with a career…prospects…who weathered the storm and found the heat of the sun…himself.

He’s taking classes…training people…writing plans…dressing up in bear suits doing cartwheels…flexing on parade floats…enjoying life…If he can do it…why can’t you??

DO YOU EVEN SQUAT THOUGH!?

With a movement like the squat which can be utilised in so many different ways to serve so many different purposes…It doesn’t matter if the exercise is being performed with body weight or under tension…fast or slow…below parallel or not.
First you have to fully understand the functionality and the mechanics of it’s essence…Not mine…his or hers…but YOUR mechanics…What works where and best for you personally.
You don’t get the benefit of any exercise if the moves are not done strictly and correctly…under contraction…You have to perform to the best of your own personal ability…it has to be performed in the safest possible way for your individual body and it’s current flexibility and fitness levels.
The exercises…your intention…their purpose…all need to be understood…the intention determines the purpose…A squat and it’s variations are a key and amazing exercise…but not the only one you should focus on.
Nowadays squatting is projected through a mass amount of marketing and imagery as the “magic” exercise…capable of creating mystical spellbinding results…The body weight and weighted variety.
The problem is that the ideology of the squat as a whole is starting to get misconceived and over looked…as the exercise is now becoming such common place and practice…The fundamentals are being taken for granted and it has in a lot of ways become so generic…that it can develop in to being an outlet for injury to the majority of every day people.
My opinions are based on what I have seen with my eyes on a daily basis…if taken at face value…if not done correctly or fully understood for your own specific structure…Squats can be and usually are a quick way to knee/back/hip/ankle/joint issues.
Especially when being performed in variations…Like in a high impact manner such as plyometric high intensity circuits…or with a barbell and weight.
For the mass public who are targeted daily by countless different channels and outlets… it’s more about the dream or end result that they’ve been sold than it is about taking the time to learn…taking the time to develop and grow.
For many people it’s just about getting through what they think needs to be done…As quickly as possible…in the hope of attaining these astoundingly quick results that drew them to the exercise in the first place.
For most people it isn’t about finding the safest most effective way to create a mental and physical foundation of success and benefit…It’s more often than not about conforming to the stresses pushed upon people from societies eye…Smaller bum…bigger bum…rounder bum…smaller legs…bigger legs…more shape to the thighs…etc…etc.
It often gets disregarded that the squat is essentially a functional everyday movement…It’s as simple as sitting down on a chair or on the toilet… in which we all do subconsciously everyday of our lives…In a workout it’s simply utilized as an exercise performed under contraction and tension…with a neutrally aligned posture for performance and physical benefit.
When we sit down we naturally perform the process countless times a day…we perform it with no thought  to the stages or processes needed in which to create or allow that movement…It’s when squats are projected as this awe inspiring magical exercise that they start to become confusing.
When we have to take that subconscious movement out of its comfort zone and apply it under strict…correct…and aligned execution…The easiest parts of the movement are becoming over complicated and the hardest parts simplified.
 SO WHY HAS THE SQUAT BECOME DANGEROUS AND GENERIC?
THE SQUAT HAS EVOLVED IN TO A MARKETABLE “QUICK FIX” AND NECESSITY WHICH APPARENTLY DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY THOUGHT PROCESS OR RATIONALISM WHEN BEING PERFORMED AS AN EXERCISE OR UNDER INTENSITY.
MOST PROMOTE IT AS A SQUAT IS A SQUAT IS A SQUAT….IT JUST REQUIRES YOU TO DROP DOWN AND COME BACK UP AGAIN TO BURN ALL THE CALORIES YOU WANT AND SHAPE ALL THE BODY PARTS NEEDED…SIMPLE AS THAT.

THE MAJORITY OF TRAINERS AND PEOPLE WITHIN THE ACTUAL FITNESS INDUSTRY DO THIS AS A JOB TO PURELY MAKE MONEY…TO EARN A LIVING.

THEY NEVER WANTED TO TAKE THE TIME TO FULLY UNDERSTAND OR TO QUESTION THE NORM…THIS ISN’T THEIR LIFE…THIS ISN’T WHAT STAND FOR…THEY ARE USUALLY JUST LOOKING FOR  SOME FORM OF SALE IN NUMBERS.

A GENERIC OUTPUT THAT CAN ACCUMULATE A MASS AUDIENCE FOR A QUICK…GENERIC…SIMPLISTIC…EASY TO UNDER STAND MODEL…ONE THAT CAN BE PERFORMED WITH LITTLE THOUGHT OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED…ONE THAT CAN BE SOLD TO EVERBODY.

WHEN YOU ARE TAUGHT TO BE A TRAINER OR A COACH… IN 99% OF CASES YOU ARE EITHER TAUGHT A GENERIC WAY TO SQUAT…OR SOMEBODY ELSE’S WAY…THEY TEACH YOU A SQUAT…THEN THAT SQUAT…BECOMES YOUR SQUAT…THEN YOU ARE QUALIFIED AND IT IS COMPLETELY UP TO YOU…ON YOUR OWN TO DECIDE HOW FAR YOU WANT TO DEVELOP FROM THERE…IF AT ALL.

REGARDLESS…YOU ARE STILL “QUALIFIED” BY YOUR PIECE OF PAPER TO PREACH…PROMOTE…AND DEVELOP THE SQUAT TO A MASS DEMOGRAPHIC OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

IF YOU LINED UP A HUNDRED TRAINERS AND ASKED THEM ABOUT THE MOVEMENT…ALTHOUGH SOME MAY HAVE DIFFERENT BELIEFS SURROUNDING THE EXERCISE…99 WOULD DEMONSTRATE AND EXPLAIN TO YOU THE EXACT SAME PROCESS

THE EXACT SAME MOVEMENT AS A SQUAT IS A SQUAT IS A SQUAT…BUT IT’S NOT…IT’S INDIVIDUAL…THIS ISN’T ME “HATING”…THIS IS ME TELLING YOU THAT I DO THIS 7 DAYS A WEEK 12-16 HOURS A DAY…ACROSS MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE FITNESS INDUSTRY…THIS IS MY LIFE…AND IT SADDENS ME THAT THIS IS WHAT I SEE MORE OFTEN THAN NOT

A SQUAT IS COMPLETELY INDIVIDUAL REGARDLESS OF THE VARIATION…IT PRIMARILY HAS TO DO WITH THE HIP JOINT AND THE WAY IN WHICH THE LEGS ARE CONNECTED TO IT.

THIS IS THE KEY ELEMENT THAT I DON’T HEAR ENOUGH TRAINERS TALKING ABOUT… DEPENDING ON THIS DEPENDS ON HOW WIDE YOU ARE GOING TO NEED YOUR LEGS…HOW WIDE YOU ARE ABLE TO WIDEN THEM…HOW DEEP YOU ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GO (REGARDLESS OF AN IMPROVEMENT OF FLEXIBILITY OR NOT)

THE HIP JOINT WILL DETERMINE IF YOUR FEET NEED TO BE COMPLETELY STRAIGHT FACING…IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE POINTING OUTWARDS OR IN SOME CASES POINTING INWARDS…ONE PERSON  I TRAIN ACTUALLY REQUIRES THIS DUE TO THEIR HIP STRUCTURE…IT IS GOING TO ALSO DETERMINE HOW MANY VARIATIONS YOU ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM. 
MAKING SOMEBODY SQUAT WITH FEET STRAIGHT AT COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR FUTURE LIFE IF THEIR STRUCTURE REQUIRES FOR THEM TO BE AT 45 DEGREES…SOME PEOPLE CAN SQUAT MANY DIFFERENT WAYS AND GET MANY DIFFERENT BENEFITS…SOME PEOPLE ONE OR TWO…IT IS DOWN TO THE INDIVIDUAL.

For those of you who don’t know me…My name is Lee Cleaver…The Pioneer Of Movement.

I am the Founder of Cleaver Fit…#THE TRUE 1%…And Fitness Without The Lies.

I’m a specialist coach and trainer…who works with professional athletes…service men…the general public…and the injured.

I’m currently on my way to qualifying as a clinical soft tissue therapist at the highest level…and will be reprising my roll fully as the unique group and class instructor…and motivational speaker Mid 2016.

My friends…

The health…the medical…the nutrition…and the fitness industries…are no more than an amalgamated covenant of lies…fabrication…deception…and distortion.
